Planning Sustainable Communities:

Lessons from Northern California and Beyond

Alex Hinds

Tuesday, December 8 – San Francisco, California

Alex Hinds currently directs Sonoma State University's Center for Sustainable Communities and oversees the university’s Green Building Program. For over 24 years, he directed community development agencies for Marin, San Luis Obispo, and Lake Counties and was the principal architect behind Marin County’s general plan update, the nation’s first to calculate its municipal ecological footprint and comprehensively address climate change. The plan and its related sustainability program received top national and state awards from the American Planning Association.

Mr. Hinds was one of the founding members of Green Cities, California, and was a former Fulbright Scholar in Ecuador who researched the impacts of colonization on the upper Amazon. His talk will focus on the need for communities to dramatically reduce their ecological and carbon footprints, and he’ll share leading municipal examples of sustainable community planning and development initiatives.

Join us for an introduction to the work of The Pachamama Alliance followed by dinner (no-host) and our guest speaker. If you have any questions please contact Eve Libertone at eve@pachamama.org.
